Treatment Systems for Landfill and Waste Gas


Treatment of waste gasses, such landfill gas or biogas is becoming a growing business. The production of "green" energy, minimizes the release of (toxic) gasses into the atmosphere.
Eltacon offers solutions for the treatment and transportation of these gases, such as compression, filtration, drying, dewatering and removal of impurities. Projects can be executed on a turnkey basis.


Landfill Gas

To supply landfill gas for flares or consumers like gas engines, the gas may need to be compressed.
The picture shows a process to generate natural gas out of landfill gas.

The process consists of following steps:
  • Compression (blower + screw compressor)
  • Desulphurisation
  • CO2-removal with waterwash system
  • Removal of halogenated compound
  • Drying
  • Odorisation

  • This installation was built in 1987 and still is operating successfully.

    Bio Gas

    Wet biogas is dried and made suitable as fuel gas for gas engines. The gas is being boostered and water is removed by a glyco-based drying system.
    The picture shows an installation to be placed outdoors in Dublin.

    To improve the running time of biogas fired gas engines the sulphur content of the biogas is drastically lowered by means of absorption.
    Biogas with a flow of 1.100 Nm³/h flows through a filter vessel, with a capacity of 10 m³, which is filled with 'iron sponge'.
    Sulphur is removed by means of absorption by the 'iron sponge' medium thus reducing the level of sulphur in the biogas from 2.000 ppm to 5 ppm.
    From time to time during this process, air & KOH are injected in the filter vessel to improve the working of the 'iron sponge'.
    A gas-to-gas heat exchanger is installed in the outlet piping to make sure that the temperature of the biogas going to the gas engines is sufficiently above the dew point.

    Commissioning and start-up was performed in March 2004.
